Therapists for college students near University of Pittsburgh
If you’ve been holding it together for everyone else — you’re in the right place. I work with college students who are smart, self-aware, and tired. Tired of feeling the pressure to have it all figured out. Tired of coping in all the wrong ways. My clients come in navigating problems like: anxiety and unhealthy behaviors, substance misuse, perfectionism and burnout, and PTSD/trauma. I currently accept new clients to participate in virtual sessions with, who are located in the states of NJ and PA. As your therapist, I will inquire what brings you to therapy and what goals you would like to work towards. Our work together will feel like conversations with someone who sees you, takes you seriously, and does right by you. My therapeutic style is a curated balance of guidance and compassion. I will advocate for you, support you, and celebrate your accomplishments. We may also curiously examine potential challenges or barriers, and how to overcome these, together. I specialize in working with clients from the ages of 14 to adulthood, who are inquisitive, self-aware, and deeply motivated to understand themselves better, improve their relationships, move into a place of self-respect/love, and develop adaptive ways of coping, communicating, and problem-solving. I have worked for many years with children, teens, adults, and families dealing with trauma and change and searching for authenticity, often in a world that values the superficial. Therapy is a process of seeking meaning, managing change, letting go of what no longer makes sense for who we are and what we want, healing, and growing. I am most suited to help clients dealing with loss, prior childhood trauma, depression, anxiety, ADHD, identity (in all its manifestations), divorce, self-esteem, grief, and emotional regulation. The goals are different for everyone, yet I believe that we all want to feel more balanced, more joyful, and more healthfully connected with others. As a psychologist with 25 years of post-doctoral experience, I’ve been exposed to various modalities, settings, and clients dealing with differing issues, life changes, and developmental expectations. I’ve also found that my professional practice has evolved as I’ve matured, raised children, and survived losses and challenges. We are in this together.

I am a licensed professional counselor who has a straightforward approach that is combined with empathy and understanding. I will take a person where they are, not where I want them to be or where others tell them they should be. I have worked for the past 10+ years with individuals who experience a combination of symptoms/stressors. I have worked with many different individuals with varying diagnoses, to include depression, anxiety, bipolar, PTSD, trauma, and personality disorders. I use a combination of therapies to be most effective in approaching treatment with others. I do not take walk-in appointments, and I am best reached by email or texting. I do offer free 20-minute phone-consultations for any person looking to explore therapy and still has questions or concerns.
Valerie believes that everyone should be given an opportunity and have someone listen to them regardless of age, race, status, circumstances, etc. This sets her apart from others because just simply listening and caring, can make someone feel validated and respected. This approach completely changes one’s day or perspective and that means the world to Valerie. We all struggle from time to time, whether it be feeling anxious or depressed, struggling with core issues, and traumas. Therapy should be a safe space to explore these issues and learn more about ourselves in the process. As a therapist Valerie focus on individuals, families, and child/adolescent therapy. Together we can explore core issues of trauma, mood disorders, suicidality, depression, anxiety, negative behaviors, addictive behaviors, grief and loss, stage of life change, emotional regulation, co-parenting, attachment, family structure, and other life transitions.

I believe that therapy is a wonderful way to explore inner thoughts and feelings in a safe, supportive, encouraging environment. I enjoy working with college-age students who are struggling with a variety of challenges such as trauma, anxiety, depression, stress, ADHD, post-partum, miscarriage, and relationship difficulties. I believe in the integration of body, mind, and spirit and the importance of bringing balance to one's life for optimal functioning. Our journey together would work toward wellness and healing in a trusting, safe, and secure relationship. I integrate a variety of therapies to best suit my clients' needs, including EMDR, Internal Family Systems, trauma-focused therapies, and traditional talk psychotherapy. I have a certification in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy, as well as training in Internal Family Systems therapy. I am dedicated to helping my clients heal from past and current traumas through the power of a trusting, secure therapeutic relationship where they can discover and know their inner strengths.
Are you struggling with symptoms of anxiety or depression? Maybe you are experiencing family conflict or perhaps you are dealing with grief or loss. I have specialized training in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)- an approach that offers concrete tools you can use to cultivate greater happiness, reduce anxiety, resolve conflict and navigate challenges in more effective ways. I have broad experience working with university students creating a safe and supportive environment where we focus not only on evidence-based methods, but also on identifying and harnessing your strengths to manifest positive change
If you need mental health support, you shouldn’t have to worry about your therapist judging you or making you feel uncomfortable. You are the expert in who you are, and I do my best to learn from my clients and provide a safe space to address whatever you’re going through. I frequently use cognitive behavioral, insight oriented, and emotions focused interventions within session. I’m also trained and certified in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) which is frequently used to address trauma but is also helpful in reducing the distress experienced around any negative thought and replacing it with a healthier/adaptive thought. I appreciate that I can’t be a good fit for everyone, so I welcome consultation calls to explore if my approach to counseling would be supportive to what you’re looking for within therapy.
